State NASP Tournament Set for March 22

LINCOLN – More than 630 archers will take part in the state’s largest archery event March 22 – the Nebraska National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) state tournament in Lincoln.

The event takes place at the Lancaster Event Center, 4100 N. 84th St. With the first of five flights of competition beginning at 8 a.m. Trophies and medals will be awarded.

NASP is an in-school curriculum covering target archery for students in grades 4-12. During the 2012-2013 school year, 2.3 million students participated in NASP. The 2013 national tournament was certified by Guinness World Records as the largest archery tournament in the world with 9,426 shooters.

In Nebraska, more than 200 schools have NASP as part of their physical education curriculum, and more than 25,000 students participate each school year.

“The interest in archery is at an all-time high right now. The archery in the schools program does an amazing job of providing the opportunity to all youth in the school the chance to experience the fun and benefits of this life skill – whatever their abilities or situation,” said Aaron Hershberger, Nebraska’s NASP coordinator. “Archery shooting is a great way to build self-confidence, and way to learn discipline and patience.”
