Bird, Tomahawk Programs Set at Chadron State Park

Birds and tomahawks are the topics of a pair of nature programs at Chadron State Park this weekend.

Amanda Filipi, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission outdoor education specialist, will lead a birding program at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 28. Following at 10:30 a.m., she will teach participants to throw a tomahawk “like a regular Daniel Boone.”

Those participating in the birding program will learn about species’ adaptations, extensive migrations and unique field marks. They will also enjoy a short hike around the park to seek the many species of birds. For hikers without binoculars, a set will be provided.

Participants of the tomahawk program will learn about the weapon’s history and supplies needed for the hobby. Those ages 10 and older accompanied by an adult will have the opportunity to try their skills at throwing.

Each activity begins at the park’s Trading Post and is open to the public free of charge. Vehicles are required to have a park entry permit, available for purchase online at outdoornebraska.org or at the park’s entrance.
