Reel ‘Em In Roadtrip with Lynn Berggren

Al Hanson, Joe Rydell and I fished Box Butte Reservoir on Wednesday morning. Located in the NW corner of the state, the lake offers camping, toilets, fish cleaning facilities and concrete boat ramp with dock. The lake, used for irrigation, will have been drawn down during summer months. Water level is currently down approx. 10 foot.

The lake has walleye, northern pike, panfish, bass along with blue and channel catfish. Wednesday we had a nice chop on the water so we opted to troll for walleye and pike. Small pike were easy to come by along the south side weed beds. Midday, we changed tactics and landed a couple monster catfish.

If you’re looking for a secluded spot with lots of pike and panfish action, give Box Butte a try.

Nebraska Game and Parks District 6 Commissioner Lynn Berggren is in the midst of a “Reel ‘em in Roadtrip,” in which he and his are friends trying out the fishing at different Central Nebraska lakes. Over the coming weeks, he’ll be writing about his experiences. Check back to see where he’s been.
