The Roosevelt’s

Every now and then on my blog, I swerve into a little “class”, even on a Friday.  Today might be one of those days.

I am not a huge history buff, but I have tried to take in The Roosevelts on public TV this week.  This is another series on American history done by Ken Burns.  He has done series on the Civil War, the Dust Bowl, Baseball, and our National Parks to name a few.  Ken Burns’ films bring American history alive and I am fascinated by them.  That has been the case again this week when I have been able to see some of the series on the Roosevelts.  Teddy and FDR were two of the greatest presidents our country have ever had.  You may agree or disagree with their policies, but there is no doubt they both were great leaders and both served our country in exceptional ways.  I have learned many things from The Roosevelts series this week that I never knew before.  There is a lot to be understood about the way things are today, by knowing the past.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to watch all the episodes in their entirety, so I will be trying to pick up re-broadcasts, or watching on-line.

One thing I did know before watching this week, was the important role Teddy Roosevelt played in natural resource conservation in our country.  If you hunt, fish, or trap; enjoy fish and wildlife, parks, refuges and wild areas, you have benefited greatly from the efforts of Teddy Roosevelt and other leaders of our nation’s conservation movement over a hundred years ago.  President Teddy was an avid hunter and outdoorsman; he foresaw the importance of conserving our country’s fish, wildlife, and natural areas, for the people, for future generations.

A few years ago, my family and my sister’s family spent a couple, three days exploring Yellowstone.  We entered through the north entrance, Roosevelt’s Arch, near Gardiner, Montana.

President Roosevelt was present for the placement of the cornerstone at that arch.

It is “holy ground”.

Of course at that time, there was a speech given:

Go to the website for Ken Burns’ film, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, look over on the right side and click on the video there to listen to a recitation of some of Teddy’s remarks–good “stuff”, really good stuff.

You can tell, especially considering my career, who I am, President Teddy Roosevelt is a hero of mine.  He rightly deserves a place on Mt. Rushmore.

And now let me finish by putting my whacked Friday perspective on this. . . . I found this on the internet, been waiting for an opportunity to use it:

Going to be a great weekend, GO FISH, GO HUNT, get outdoors and enjoy it!  Teddy would!
