Go Big Red Means Go Outdoors

“Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory.”

Question: When is the absolute best time to go outdoors — hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, campingboating, etc. in the fall here in Nebraska? I’ll tell you. There’s no debating it either. It’s a Saturday (like the one coming up) when the University of Nebraska Cornhusker football team is playing a game during the daytime on television. Home games at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln take even more people away from the woods, waters and prairies here in Nebraska as the stadium becomes the third largest city in the state.

Now, don’t get me wrong here. I am a lifelong Nebraskan and as big a Big Red fan as they come!

I thoroughly enjoy going to a Husker game or two a year, however, when asked if one ever interferes with major Saturday hunting season openers such as firearm deer, my answer pointedly is “NO!” I’m in the field hunting with my sons, brothers, nephews, cousins, friends, etc. Listen, if I would have forewent time in the field in 2008 during the firearm deer hunting season opener when Nebraska played a big game against the Kansas State Wildcats on Nov. 15th, my young son Noah would not have shot his first deer – this nice white-tailed buck – and made memories that are forever etched in his mind.

So, how about you, are you a Husker Football Fan? Do daytime Husker games on Saturdays in the fall stop you from getting outside?

I’ll bet you’ll be out there enjoying the peace and solitude that Nebraska’s great outdoors offer on a Husker game day (while perhaps DVRing the game). I like what one of my neighbors in Omaha told me the other day: “Greg, I think in your Nebraska outdoor world, ‘Go Big Red’ means go outdoors because everybody is either watching or at the game.”
