New Hunter Education Options Available

LINCOLN – New options are available for people who want to become certified in hunter education in Nebraska. These options are designed to make the course accessible to more people.

There now are two certification options for both firearm and bowhunter education for each of two age groups.

People age 11 to 15 may complete hunter education (firearm or bow) either by taking a traditional 10-hour classroom course or by taking an online course followed by participation in a two-hour Hunt Safe Session.

People age 16 and older may take a 10-hour classroom course or take an online course. Participation in a Hunt Safe Session is optional for this age group.

The classroom course is free, while there is a fee for the online course.

Hunt Safe Sessions primarily cover tree stand safety, equipment safety, and shoot/don’t shoot scenarios. Participants must bring their Hunt Safe Session Voucher to the Hunt Safe Session as proof of having passed the online course. Participants who pass the Hunt Safe Session then will receive their hunter education certificate.

Firearm hunter education is required in Nebraska for all people ages 12 through 29 who hunt any game species with a firearm or air gun. Bowhunter education is required in Nebraska for all hunters ages 12 through 29 who hunt deer, elk, antelope or mountain (bighorn) sheep with bow and arrow or crossbow. Hunters must carry proof of successful completion of hunter education while hunting.
