In Nebraska, The Wind Blows

If any of you reading my blog have not figured out by now, I am a HUGE fan and follower of In-Fisherman.  Simply put, if you want to become a better angler, you better be reading, watching, studying all of their “stuff”–videos, TV shows, radio shows, books, magazines, etc.

Recently, in the flagship magazine, they have been re-running classic articles.  You may thing that is stupid for a magazine to do “re-runs”, but not if you consider the articles they are re-running to be seminal, fundamental, ground-breaking.  I am old enough to remember when many of those articles ran for the first time, and I can recall how much the “learnin'” in those stories helped me catch more and bigger fish.

For example, anglers on large bodies of water like the oceans or the Great Lakes are very aware of currents and water movements.  In Nebraska you may not believe those kind of things happen on our waters, but they do!  If you have lived in Nebraska for any length of time you know the wind blows, and when the wind blows it starts water moving.  Those water movements and currents are of a lesser scale on smaller bodies of water, but they are present nonetheless and you better believe fish in our Nebraska waters are very aware of even the smallest, slightest water movements.  If you are ready for a in-depth introduction to these water movements, another “limnology 101” lecture, then you must sight down and take some time to study this story.  If you fish Nebraska waters, especially our larger reservoirs, this is crucial information!

Principles of Wind and Walleyes

If you can, pick up the hard copy of that issue of In-Fisherman.  It is in the July 2015 issue.  The hard copy includes more side bars, illustrations and explanations, but at the very least spend the time to read the on-line version.

Do not be fooled by the title.  The article may be specific to walleyes in relatively large bodies of water, but the principles, the water movements, are fundamental and occur to some extent on all waters and influence all fish.  Learn it, apply it, catch more fish, catch bigger fish.
