You probably are not going to see or hear anything about this, probably not going to be parades and news conferences like there should be, but tomorrow, September 26, 2015 is National Hunting and Fishing Day! Governor Ricketts signed the proclamation!
So. . . what does that mean? This will give you a little bit of an idea. . . .
Here is why it is worth a proclamation!
You have probably heard me say that hunters, anglers and trappers have been, and continue to be the original conservationists. We are the foundation on which our very successful North American fish & wildlife management “model” has been built ( North American Model of Conservation, Part I , North American Model of Conservation, Part II ). I have often wondered if instead of referring to our permits as “hunting” permits, “fishing” permits, or “fur harvester” permits, we should refer to them as “wildlife conservation” permits, “fisheries conservation” permits, and “fur-bearers conservation” permits? Maybe they are not so much “permits” that are required for hunting, fishing and trapping as they are privileged donations for the conservation of the fish & game that we love? Not to mention the resources (and subsequent excise taxes) I invest in turkey calls, crankbaits and another dozen 110’s!
And do not leave out the trappers, the fur-harvesters. As a matter of fact, the Nebraska Fur Harvesters is having their annual convention starting today in Seward.
Here is a list of demonstrations and schedule,
and here is a list of vendors that will be present.
I know folks are busy, weekends are busy. Just remember, you can celebrate your role as a hunter, angler, trapper/fur harvester just about any day, every day depending on seasons. I am proud to do so every chance I get!
