Brook Trout Spawning

BrookTrout01

Almost every fish in Nebraska waters spawns at some time during the spring.  That can occur from early, early spring all the way through summer.  So, yes, I am stretching when I use the word “spring” to describe the timing of that reproductive activity. However, that wording is correct because they do not spawn in the fall. With two exceptions. . . . Brown trout and brook trout in Nebraska are fall spawners.  Yes, we do have populations of both …

Inside Scoop

P6090034

I am hoping many of you dismiss this blog post. First of all, this blog is pretty much going to be a link to another blog.  You can follow the link if you wish, or blow it off.  The choice is yours. Secondly, you will see the article is about fishing in Canada.  You can ignore that because obviously, it will not apply to the waters you fish in Nebraska. You might be even more inclined to dismiss it when …

Good News for Nebraska Streams!

IMG_4473

Twenty Years of Aquatic Habitat Program

A soon-to-be underwater view of the aquatic habitat and angler access improvements underway at Conestoga Reservoir southwest of Lincoln. Excavation, basin sculpting, rock piles and root wads are great for fish, while the new breakwater and ADA piers will be great for fishing. To see drone footage of this project, visit OutdoorNebraska.org/aquatichabitatprogram.

Last summer Central removed a large amount of sediment from the lake.  Central has leased a …

Prairie Queen, Below the Surface

PrairieQueenAerial

Anglers, if you have not seen it already, you MUST check out the July 2016 issue of NEBRASKAland.  Of course, as always, this issue is packed with lots of great information and great photography.  But, specifically what I want to call your attention to is a story by Jeff Kurrus on pages 58-63.  On those pages Jeff chronicles, mostly using photographs, the construction of Prairie Queen Reservoir near Omaha.  Seeing the Change at Prairie Queen consists of a number of …
