Adventure Report, Late Ice 2023

According to many experts on the interwebs, Nebraska’s ice-fishing season has been DONE for a couple of weeks now. BALONEY. Nebraska is a big state.  You have probably heard me say before that the state’s geography and climate changes A LOT from one end of the state to the other.  You may live in the southeast part of Nebraska, where much of our human population does live, and you may think the ice fishing season is over.  It ain’t, not …

On the Ice, Mid-Winter 2023

PC140003

Yep, I have still been on the ice, have been on it as much as possible.  I will give you a quick report of what I have been catching. . . . I have been out in different parts of the state a couple of times.  Spent a couple hours one evening on a spot, and managed one of these! Then of course, I could only catch one.  Walleyes through the ice can be frustrating.  I would tell you that …

WP’s

Portal Basin 1

I will tell you that the days of building big reservoirs are likely long past.  However, some relatively small reservoirs will continue to be built in Nebraska.  Most of them built by Natural Resource Districts (NRDs).  In most cases these projects are in urban areas to provide flood control and perhaps some recreation.  Fortunately, we, the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission Fisheries Division often are involved in the design and construction of these reservoirs.  Our assistance is provided for water …

Parallel

DanIceLMB2021c

My son and I do not get to fish together all the time.  Still it is nice knowing that even though we are separated by miles, we are on the water.  Maybe apart for now, but still on the water.  In fact it is interesting how often we are doing the same things even though we are fishing individually. For example, each winter we target big bluegills, 10-inches and larger, just like we get after muskies in open water.  At …

Convergence

P2050042

Work schedules for my kids converged recently and they both had days off at the same time.  They were going fishing. Of course I found a way to go with them! First, let me play my usual part of “old man” and say a thing or three about ice safety. . . . Our trip was at the beginning of the arctic outbreak.  We still found patches of unsafe ice.  Snow on the ice made that even more difficult to …

The End, The Beginning

P3020016

Last adventure report I called that I might not be done ice-fishing yet. I was not. Made it to more northerly parts of the state last week and crawled onto the ice one last time.  Believe me, my partner and I spent as much time checking to make sure we could get on and off and go where we wanted, as we did fishing.  Neither one of us ventured anywhere without the spud bar, ice picks and life jackets. You …

Done?

P2070004

I am seeing lots of proclamations about our ice fishing season being over. Whatever. There are a lot of folks that bail on ice fishing because they are not committed.  They fantasize about fishing open water much too much.  On the first day with temperatures above freezing, they declare it over. You will NOT get me to make that announcement.  In fact, I will be on it as long as I can.  The longer it lasts, the better! And, I …

Delayed New Year

SandhillsCrappie2020ZCox

You may have heard me say before that my calendar is a little different.  Most folks recognize January 1 as New Year’s Day.  My “New Year” starts the first day I walk onto the ice for the season.  “New Year” can start some time in December, or maybe later than that.  This year, unfortunately, it has been later, too much later. I was hopeful “New Year’s Day” was going to be around the end of December.  At that time, I …
